The house edge is permanent. Your limits should be too.
Every game on every casino we review is built to pay out less than it takes in over time — that's not a scandal, it's the product. Gambling can only ever be entertainment with a price, never a way to make money. This page is about keeping the price one you chose.

Before you play: three decisions
- A money limit, set on the site. Every UKGC-licensed casino offers deposit limits. Set one at registration, while you're calm: lowering it applies immediately, raising it is deliberately delayed — usually by at least 24 hours — so the limit protects you from your own worst evening.
- A time plan. Decide when the session ends before it starts, and switch on reality-check reminders where offered. Losing track of an hour is normal; the reminder isn't for the first hour, it's for the third.
- A rule for losses. They're the cost of the entertainment, spent the moment you stake them. The single most damaging habit in gambling is chasing — betting more to win back what's gone. If you notice the thought "I just need to get back to even", the session is already over.
Warning signs worth taking seriously
- Gambling with money needed for rent, bills or food — or borrowing to play.
- Hiding the amount or the time spent from people close to you.
- Chasing losses, or raising deposit limits repeatedly.
- Playing to escape stress or low mood rather than for fun.
- Feeling restless or irritable when trying to cut down.
One of these is a prompt to pause and take stock — GambleAware's free self-assessment is a good, private way to do that. Several of them together are a reason to talk to someone today, not after the next payday.
The tools, strongest first
- GAMSTOP. One free registration at gamstop.co.uk excludes you from every online gambling site licensed in Great Britain — for six months, one year or five years, irreversible until it expires. Takes about five minutes.
- Bank-level blocks. Most major UK banks can switch off gambling transactions on your cards from within their app, many with a cooling-off period before the block can be lifted. It catches sites that marketing emails might tempt you toward later.
- Blocking software. Tools such as those promoted through the free TalkBanStop partnership stop gambling sites loading on your devices at all.
- Site-level tools. Deposit limits, time-outs from 24 hours to six weeks, and per-operator self-exclusion — useful for managing play that's still fun, insufficient once it isn't.
Free, confidential help
Talking to any of them commits you to nothing. The helpline in particular exists for the conversation you're not sure you need to have — that's precisely the right time to call.
